⌄Midrails & wire infills do not comply with the maximum 100mm gaps and could be regarded as climable; in which situations can these be used?
External areas and ramps are common, also used within buildings but not recommended where likely users include children under 5 years of age.
⌄What are the design considerations for Escape width on a stair?
The escape width is defined by walls or, elsewhere, the minimum width of passage between fixed obstructions, down the staircase. Typically it would be the distance between the wall and the face of the balustrade provided the handrail (only) doesn't protrude from these points, more than 100mm.
The escape width requirement can vary from project to project in accordance with the fire strategy associated with each.
⌄What are the design considerations for clear width on a stair?
The clear width between handrails relates to access, especially disabled access. Provided the handrail doesn't protrude from the wall or face of the balustrade, more than 100mm, it can be measured between handrails.
