Eclipse Leisure Centre (formerly Spelthorne Leisure Centre) in Staines stands as a modern community hub where design innovation meets functionality. Tasked with delivering a safe, visually striking environment, Delta Balustrades was engaged to design, supply, and install a range of balustrade solutions. In collaboration with Willmott Dixon and GT3 Architects, this project not only meets stringent safety and compliance standards but also contributes to the centre’s bold, contemporary aesthetic.

Inspired by GT3 Architects’ forward-thinking design, the leisure centre was envisioned as a space that blends high-quality finishes with an inviting atmosphere for both active and leisure pursuits. The architectural intent was to create open, light-filled areas that promote community engagement while ensuring robust safety features throughout the facility. The centre is designed to meet the Passivhaus standard, prioritising energy efficiency and sustainability.

Delta Balustrades played a pivotal role by integrating their signature systems seamlessly into the design, ensuring that every installation contributed to a cohesive look and safe environment.

Delta Balustrades’ Contribution

Delta’s specialist systems were strategically deployed across key areas of the centre to maximise natural light and maintain a safe environment:

  • Orbis OS211 Tubular Balustrade System (277m): Installed in the roof terrace, internal stairs, café, and external entrance, this system—with its glass infill—creates unobstructed views and a light, modern feel that complements the centre’s design intent for openness and natural light.
  • Orbis OS200 Tubular Balustrade System (124m): On internal stairs and landings, this powder-coated system with a vertical bar infill reinforces safety while maintaining a refined, industrial aesthetic.
  • Tubular Wall Handrail (40m): Along internal staircases, the powder-coated handrail offers both durability and style, reinforcing user safety.
  • Mono M310 Flat Bar Balustrade System (84m): In spectator seating areas, this stainless steel system with glass panel infills showcases a minimalistic design, aligning with the centre’s sleek, contemporary look and allowing for clear views of the sports activities.
  • Orbis OS250 Handrail (27m): Positioned in the pool areas, this free-standing stainless steel handrail enhances both safety and visual impact.

Delta Balustrades’ choice of durable, low-maintenance materials supports the centre’s sustainability objectives, ensuring that the balustrade systems contribute to the building’s long-term energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact. Additionally, Delta’s selection of 316-grade polished stainless steel for the pool and marine environments further enhances durability, effectively mitigating corrosion risks while maintaining a sleek, modern finish.
