Contractor: Kier Construction – London

Architect: Hawkins Brown Architects, London

Challenge 1:

Kier opted to maximise stair widths proposing balustrades be side fixed. However due to the layout of the stairs, access to achieve the side fix was difficult.

Delta Balustrades agreed the positioning of temporary edge protection with Kier to ensure the stair core was accessible.

Challenge 2:

The lightwell balustrades required side fixing however the lightwell void was less than 1m wide. With a suitable substrate of 200mm thick concrete to fix to, the issue of access rose again.

Careful consideration for access and sequencing of installation between Delta Balustrades and Kier led to the creation of a temporary platform across the entire void to allow installation, this was repeated for each floors void.

Challenge 3:

External Orbis balustrades with perforated infill panels needed to be fixed to the top of a brickwork wall or concrete steps.

Upon specification Delta Balustrades advised Kier that core drilling was an essential fixing solution which would need to be considered at an earlier stage in the project.

Learning Outcomes:

Kier had used Delta Balustrades Orbis system on previous EFA schools and proposed this detail to the architect at an early stage.  Delta Balustrades then worked closely with the architect to assist in the design stages.

Considering the placement of temporary edge protection at an early stage ensured Kier didn’t have to adjust the existing temporary edge protection at the time of balustrade installation.
