Education Estates® brings together the people responsible for funding, designing, managing and maintaining the education estate, and this year we’re joining them in Manchester. If you look after buildings for a multi-academy trust, college or university, we’d like to show you a more planned way to manage one of the assets your building users touch most often – and think about least.
The asset everyone uses and no one owns
In most trusts, balustrades and handrails fall to site teams as part of general maintenance. Those checks are useful for spotting obvious damage, but they’re visual by nature. Load performance, fixing integrity, compliance with current standards and the early signs of failure aren’t usually part of the role. Over a whole estate that adds up to inconsistency site by site, costs that only appear once something has gone wrong, and no documented view of where you actually stand on compliance.
That matters because a balustrade is a safety-critical asset. It’s relied on many times a day by children, students and staff, and when it fails the consequences are serious.
A planned way to close the gap
Our Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programme gives estates teams a formal, evidenced alternative. We carry out inspections against the relevant British Standards and Building Regulations, and provide a full written report – a clear picture of where every site genuinely stands.
It’s designed to sit alongside the work your site teams already do, not replace it. The programme standardises the approach across every school, supports duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act and Work at Height Regulations, and speaks to the condition and compliance evidence expected under Good Estate Management for Schools (GEMS). In short, it turns a safety-critical asset into one you can evidence, budget for and manage proactively.
Most trusts don’t start estate-wide. They begin with a single school, or a small handful of sites, to see the value before rolling the programme out further – a straightforward first step we’re happy to talk through at the show.

Our proprietary systems arrive pre-assembled and install up to 40% faster than standard methods, with no hot works or on-site tooling which keeps disruption down in occupied schools and fits tight summer works programmes.
